Ask Yogi Karrie
I can’t even touch my toes, can I still come to a yoga class?
Yes, like any other form of exercise, you will gradually build the strength and flexibility required to do the poses. When you are starting out, we encourage you to simply do your best. Each time you practice you will notice improvement. Often people think of yoga as students in extreme and crazy positions. Though some people who do yoga are able to move into extraordinary positions; this is not the goal of yoga. Everyone in the classroom, instructors included, had a first class once – nobody expects you to be an expert the first day.
What are the benefits of yoga?
Yoga is challenging in many ways. With regular practice; yoga can create flexibility, build strength, and develop stamina. In the beginning, you will be challenged by the poses simply because you are learning a combination of unfamiliar movements. As you gain experience, you will find that you will want to challenge yourself and strive toward perfecting each of the poses. The benefits of yoga can be as simple as feeling strong and healthy, but often leads an individual to a more peaceful and balanced life.
Will Yoga help me lose weight?
Yoga asana (poses) were created to prepare the body and mind for meditation and was not thought of as a form of exercise or a way to lose weight. Though many people in the western world begin practicing yoga as a part of their fitness regimen they soon discover no other form of exercise so completely involves the mind and spirit with the body, resulting in total well-being. So… Yes! Yoga can help you lose weight and get toned. The poses in the class require strength, and balance, which means as you attempt them you will be working virtually every major muscle group in the body. While there are periods of rest, the poses are done one after another, which makes them an excellent aerobic workout as well. Yoga is an extremely effective workout. However, the classroom setting allows you to set a level of intensity that suits your style and your goals.
Is Yoga a religion?
No, yoga is a philosophy that began in India over 5000 years ago. The practice of Yoga aids all those who seek to improve in the areas of self-improvement both physically and mentally, regardless of their religious persuasion. It has the potential to balance the nervous system and still the mind through its various exercises; from postures (asanas) to breath control and meditation.
